Miner Duster

Dust is what quietly kills a home miner. It packs into the intake mesh, settles on the fan blades and blankets the heatsink, and the chip runs hotter for it. A hotter chip throttles, and a throttled miner hashes less. Nothing about it is dramatic. You just look up one day and your hashrate has quietly slid, and the machine is louder than it used to be because the fans are working harder to move air through a blocked grille.

The Miner Duster is a cordless electric blower built for that one job. It pushes a steady stream of air through a fan stack or a hex mesh grille without a drop of propellant, and the soft brush head lifts the dust that clings instead of blowing away. A slider on the grip sets the speed, so you can open it up on a filthy intake and ease right off around exposed boards and connectors.

A two minute job, every few weeks

Point it at the intake and work across the mesh. Take the fan blades one at a time, brush head on, low speed. Run it down the heatsink fins until the air comes out clean. Finish with the vents and the outside of the case. That is the whole routine, and doing it regularly is the difference between a miner that holds its numbers for years and one that slowly cooks itself.

It will not stay on the miner shelf

Once it is in the house it ends up everywhere. Keyboards, the fan grille on a desktop, the back of a TV, camera gear, the vents and cup holders in a car, a workbench covered in sawdust, the gap behind a radiator. It does what a can of compressed air does, except it never runs out halfway through and there is no cold blast that leaves moisture behind on a board.

Using it safely

Safe on the parts of a miner you can reach: intake mesh, fan blades, heatsink fins and the outside of the case. Let a hot miner cool before you clean it. Hold a fan still with a finger while you blow through it rather than letting it spin up freely. Keep the nozzle a short distance back from exposed boards and ribbon connectors, and drop the speed when you get close to them.
